The Basics

An escape room or puzzle room is a fun, interactive game with a team of players confined to a particular space. Teams then follow clues, crack codes and solve puzzles in pursuit of completing a certain goal. Our room is based on J.K. Rowling’s much beloved book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

There are 10 participants per session, ages 10 and up. When signing up for a particular session please be mindful of the intended age group.

The Rules

You will receive game instructions before you enter the room after which you’ll have 45 minutes to find the Sorcerer’s Stone. There is no admission after the doors close.  You should plan on being in the room for the whole game. There will be no outside help and no consulting the internet. Work as a team. If you get stuck in your search you can request 2 hints during the game.

There will be many items in the escape room and clues will be hidden among them. The room is designed to withstand multiple sessions so please do not purposefully break or rip anything in the room. Refrain from lifting any large furniture items as well.

Let’s not spoil the game for others. To that end please do not discuss the room with any other teams or post/share any pictures inside the escape room before 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 17. The team with the fastest time recorded will be declared the winner!

Registration is required and begins Wednesday, May 30 at 9 a.m.. Registration will be limited. In order to register you must contact the library directly 617-972-6436 or visit the Reference Desk. Escape room sessions will be limited in number and will each accommodate 10 participants. Each registrant is limited to a single time slot and may register a maximum of 4 participants. Please note some sessions will be limited to a specific age group.

Are you really locking us in a room?

No not really but we will have the doors closed so as not to let the magic (or the answers) out into the hall. You will be released after 45 minutes regardless of whether you are successful. Please plan on being in the room for those 45 minutes.

Do I have to have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to play?

Game play does not require Harry Potter knowledge, but it could be an advantage. It’s a quick read so request a copy from the library today!

How many people can be signed up per session?

Sessions can accommodate 10 people but there is a maximum of 4 bookings per registrant.

Do I have to sign up for all 10 spots?

No, spots will be filled by others until the session is full.

Any age restrictions?

Children aged 10 and up are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. Some sessions are intended for a specific age group, please keep this in mind when picking your preferred escape room session.

I have a younger child. Can I bring that child along? Will they take up a spot?

Younger siblings are welcome to attend. They will not use up a spot.

Do I have to live in Watertown or have a Minuteman Library Card to participate?

Do I have to wear a costume?

Costumes are welcome but certainly not required.

Can I still see the room if I’m not participating?

If you missed out on signing up, didn’t have time to take in the decor during the game, or you’re just interested in what a Harry Potter Escape Room looks like, we will be holding an Open House on Sunday 6/17 from 3-5 p.m. for people to explore, take pictures and enjoy the Wizarding World we’ve created. No registration required. Entry may be staggered to ensure the best viewing experience for all.
