Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

Surely among the most wondrous creatures on Earth, fireflies are woven into the fabric of many cultures. Their silent, ethereal beauty evokes awe and delight. Yet for most of us, these marvelous insects remain shrouded in mystery: How do these creatures make light? What’s with all their flashing? Could fireflies really be disappearing? Join noted firefly expert and author Sara Lewis in a journey from New England to Japan and Malaysia, and hear remarkable stories of firefly romance, treachery and murder. Sara Lewis, a Professor of Biology at Tufts University, has spent the past thirty years delving into the luminous lives of fireflies. In addition to writing numerous scientific articles on firefly evolution, Lewis has given a TED talk and is the author of Silent Sparks, a popular book about fireflies.
