Dawnland Documentary Screening

Wednesday, January 29, 2020

For most of the 20th century, U.S. government agents systematically forced Native American children from their homes and placed them with white families. The new, critically acclaimed documentary Dawnland explores the legacy of this practice in Maine, capturing moments of truth telling and healing among the Wabanaki people. We are proud to say that Dr. Mishy Lesser, Learning Director for the Upstander Project and a Watertown resident, did some of the original research for this film right here in the WFPL. She will lead a discussion following the screening.

Praise for Dawnland:

Winner: Emmy Award for Outstanding Research

“Riveting… testimony is emotional, tear-provoking, and grist for introspection. Turns out this reconciliation business is delicate and difficult-to-achieve terrain.” – BOSTON GLOBE

“A powerfully illuminating film — a history lesson that you’re ashamed to have never learned but whose truths you’ll likely never forget.” – CROSSCUT
