Purchasing cookbooks for the library is the most challenging part of my job. I’ve come to terms with it by acknowledging we all have some responsibilities that we struggle with more than others. I am kidding. Honestly, I can’t imagine anything more wonderful than reading reviews, poring over pictures, drooling over recipes -- buying cookbooks is a dream!
Some recent standouts include:
The Boston Homegrown Cookbook: Local Food, Local Restaurants, Local Recipes by Leigh Belangier featuring recipes from some of the area’s best restaurants -- Ten Tables’ Upside Down Rhubarb cake was do die for and easy to make.
The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying and Start Making by Alana Chernila- the pancake mix is great but I think I’ll keep buying my graham crackers.
The Cookie Dough Lover’s Cookbook: Cookies, Cakes, Candies, and More by Lindsay Landis-Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles, enough said.
When you come to the library to take a look at the cookbook section, you’ll notice some changes to the 641 collection, where cookbooks are shelved. I’m attempting to recatalog the books to make browsing a bit easier. So, for example, if you had come in to look for books on making preserves, you would have found books in 641.4 as well as in 641.85. That may not sound like a big difference, but to find the later you would have had to go through hundreds of general cookbooks as well as thousands of more specific cooking topics like money-saving, allergies, cooking for kids, special occasions, regional, baking, grilling and then you would have gotten to 641.85. But soon, all the books on making jam and preserves will be shelved together in 641.4.
